So often the breast or a bottle is offered as the cure-all when a baby cries or fusses. Parents can be in such a rush to silence the cry that they forget to first observe their baby to see what she actually needs so that they can respond accurately. This often happens because the cry makes parents anxious; their goal is to quiet the cry, which serves the parents’ needs, but not necessarily the baby’s. When we adjust the goal to first understand the cry, we respond to our babies more accurately.
