“Be good.” “Did you play nicely?” Phrases like these are confusing to kids and can lead to trouble. Too often adults toss around good to mean: Do what grown-ups tell you. Good means obedience and compliance. Being good and playing nicely could mean doing what a pedophile wants. We tend to teach obedience, but staying safe means teaching a child that she can also defy adults.
