This handout looks at the 5 key developmental domains favored here at Playvolution HQ. Others break development into 3-6 domains. Children’s development during their early years can be sorted into these domains. Children don’t split their play and exploration into such categories; for them, it all happens at once. For example, three-year-old Claudia likely dips a toe into each domain during thirty minutes of fiddling with a hunk of play dough, playing on a swing, or being a superhero. These classifications are for adults, who find them useful when planning, documenting, and discussing children’s learning.

Children’s learning tends to cross the arbitrary domains we adults set up. For example, fiddling with sand probably involves learning in all 5 of the domains explained in the above handout.
