If adult response to children’s excitement and discovery and their verbal attempts to share those is met with a distracted “Uh-huh,” or “That’s not what we are discussing, Taylor!” it is no wonder that, over time, they fall silent. They also respond by building rehearsed, dull, automatic answers to adults whom they perceive as not really interested.
