One of the most distinctive things about even the earliest pretend play is the fact that it’s accompanied by giggles. It’s the giggles, the knowing look, the dramatic exaggeration, that signal that this is not to be taken seriously. In fact, there turns out to be a consistent set of signals—giggles, exaggerated gestures, theatrical and melodramatic facial expressions—that indicate that actions are “just pretend.” And, after all, even the youngest children don’t actually try to eat the pretend cookies or even try to actually talk to Mom on the pretend cell phone.
