When we see someone else in distress, similar circuits reverberate in our brain, a kind of hardwired empathic resonance that becomes the prelude to compassion. If an infant cries, her parents’ brains reverberate in much the same way, which in turn automatically moves them to do something to soothe their baby’s distress.
