A burgeoning number of researchers and educators believe that school should include more than remembering and analyzing information. It also should sharpen fundamental psychological skills called executive functions that are needed to plan and carry out goals. Akin to an air traffic-control system that manages the comings and goings of planes on multiple runways, these brain functions include the ability to hold and manipulate information in mind (working memory), to switch mental gears and to inhibit inappropriate responses.
