The play drive may have evolved to ensure that as vulnerable and naïve young organisms, children engage with the world they live in, in ways that are in tune with their immaturity but which are also highly efficient, so that they are gradually able to interpret the sensory experiences gained whilst at play –most of which, as we shall see –are vital to their continued development, their capacity to adapt, and to their longer-term survival.
