When scared or upset, the infant goes searching for his attachment figure for comfort and reassurance. The availability, the presence of the attachment figure by itself, has a calming influence; that enables the child to pay attention to the world around him and explore his environment, deploying curiosity, gaining information and understanding, developing interests, learning about and expanding his own abilities, and, over time, gaining confidence in his ability to manage on his own. Willingness to explore is crucial, because exploration is the key to resourceful thinking. The attachment figure is also a source of connection and joy, as well as of soothing.
