Clay is an environmental variable that sparks creativity, object play, sensory play, and more. It has been replaced by play dough in many early learning settings, probably because play dough is less messy and considered easier to work. The fact that this stuff is resistant to being worked–that it can be a bit of a challenge–is one of the reasons you should provide it as a loose part. That extra effort builds strong and nimble fingers. It’s also good for kids to work at things–play dough can be too easy. Challenges are beneficial.
